Coimbatore, once a thriving hub of hockey enthusiasts, now witnesses a fading enthusiasm for the sport. As we search for the reasons behind Coimbatorians’ diminishing obsession with playing hockey, let’s hear from local luminaries who have witnessed the evolution firsthand.

Mr.Ramkrishnan (Ramky), Coimbatore District Hockey Coach (1990–1995), reflects, “During my tenure, hockey was a way of life for many youngsters. However, the lack of institutionalization and minimal media coverage have hindered the sport’s growth, leading to a decline in participation.”

Mr. Thirunayakarasu, a senior hockey player, concurs, “Unlike the Indian Premier League (IPL), which has ingrained itself in our cultural fabric, hockey lacks similar significance. The absence of cultural resonance has contributed to its dwindling popularity among Indians especially Coimbatorians.”

Mr. Paul Sudhakar, a former national hockey player, adds, “Despite representing our country with pride, hockey struggles to garner the necessary infrastructure and investment from the government. The lack of international recognition further diminishes its appeal, leaving it with few takers.”

Mr.Adam Sinclair, an esteemed national hockey player of the 2000s, shares his perspective, “While Coimbatore boasts talent and passion for hockey, the absence of institutional support and media coverage has hindered its growth. Without adequate investment and promotion, the sport struggles to capture the imagination of the youth.”

In conclusion, the decline of hockey obsession in Coimbatore can be attributed to various factors, including the lack of institutionalization, minimal media coverage, absence of cultural significance akin to the IPL, inadequate infrastructure and investment from the government, and a dearth of international recognition. To reignite the flame of hockey in Coimbatore, concerted efforts are needed to address these challenges and restore the sport to its former glory.
